Let's Keep it Fun!

“A party without cake is just a meeting.” - Julia Child

While we will be tackling many more serious topics in this space, we figure that it’s important to also keep things light and fun.

I’m writing from the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, so I know that as we collectively limp out of 2020, many of us aren’t in the mood for anything too serious. We’ll be back in 2021, which I promise will be light and full of joy. Or at the very least, it absolutely, definitely won’t be 2020.

In the meantime, please enjoy a couple of our favorite cake recipes. Whether you make them to savor with your quarantine pod or just stare longingly at the pictures, we hope that these will brighten your day/week/end-of-year. Enjoy!

Dorie Greenspan’s Bill’s Big Carrot Cake from Baking: From My Home to Yours. (While you’re at it, check out the Devil’s Food Cake recipe as well.)

Rose Levy Berenbaum’s Honey Cake for a Sweet New Year from The Baking Bible. (This has more ingredients than most full meals. It’s unbelievably well balanced and incredibly moist.

These cakes were baked and staged by professionals. But yours will still taste amazing.

Also, if you are weird and/or want to capture 2020 in its full glory, I mention (but do not endorse) Mary Berry’s Old-Fashioned Seed Cake from 100 Cakes and Bakes (My Kitchen Table), one of the most astonishing things I have ever baked. FYI, the seed in question is caraway (yeah, the thing on rye bread!) In Mary’s words, “You either love or loathe seed cake. This one has a delightfully butter flavor.” Enjoy?
